![]() While they can climb trees, they primarily spend their time on their ground, whereas tree squirrels will never burrow and retreat to trees when frightened. Ground squirrels are common problems in yards and gardens, living in a burrow system-often with other squirrels. Ground squirrels hibernate during the winter months. Most ground squirrels are found west of the Mississippi River. Tree squirrels do not hibernate, but tend to store great quantities of food, often in excess of that needed.įewer than half the species of ground squirrels are considered pests. Tree squirrel diets vary by species and are determined by their habitat and season of the year. Walnuts and apples are good baits since they may naturally occur in the squirrel's diet. Peanuts and peanut butter are superior baits. Favorite foods include fruits, nuts and seeds. Squirrels have major and minor food preferences. In addition, they have a visible yellow bar that can be seen in crawl spaces and attics to see if they have been triggered. The traps are exactly what a mousetrap should be in that they are fast-reacting, easy to set and release.
